I have suffered from nagging lower back pain for some time. Physical therapy has given me some relief but I am interested in exploring the possibility of getting a cortisone shot in my back. Does anyone have any recommendations for an orthopedist in Austin for this?

I don't have a doctor to refer you to but make sure you find a good one and explore other options before turning to cortisone. If it works it will only be a temporary solution. It won't last.

My mom gets those from time to time and it does help, but tourbound is right, got to do them several times since it's not a one time solution. She lives in Houston though, so I don't know any orthopedists in Austin. My sister may. She works for a Physical Therapy co. in Austin and they always have the dl on area docs and which ones are good at what they do.

The Texas Back Institute is located in and around the DFW area. The Lumbar specialist I saw was located in Plano. It was worth the drive(s) from Wichita Falls. I received three injections. Each one helped out some and served as a "jump" forward.

I have had very good experiences with Dr. David Savage, 892-1220, 4534 WestGate Blvd #10, in Southwest Austin. He has given me a cortisone injection for knee pain. He was very patient in answering all of my questions regarding the various options, pros and cons and benefits of different treatment options.

Loveroses and tourbound are right--it's like putting a band-aid on a problem. It is a temporary fix! Doing core strengthening exercises (PT) to build up the muscle around your core/lower back will help and be more effective long term.
