Moving to Austin very soon. Single male, no kids. Need safe but affordable rental studio/apartment to rent for a couple of months until I learn my way around,...in or near downtown, close to public transportation. Any advice? Thanks for any help, appreciate it!!

Are you moving here with out a car? Do you have a job lined up? Public transportation is not very good here so where you will want to live will really depend on where you are working.

What is your definition of "affordable"?

affordable depends on where you are coming from. Austin is really affordable in terms of rent compared to here in Philadelphia.

here a typical one bedroom here in Philadelphia is about $1000 per month, without AC, DW, very old and not in a safe neighborhood.

Austin for a one bd i have found them between $600 to $850 per month with amenities.

the pay is about the same as it is here in Philadelphia, there are buses in Austin like in most cities and there is now a public transport train, check out the Austin Transit, its a cool site

Thanks for all the replies. I will not have a car, so I would need to be near good public transportation. Still working on a job, so not sure where I will end up. My definition of cheap would be less than 600 per month, the cheaper the better since I won't be there but for a few months? ANy ideas for a good rental? Not sure what area of town would be best? Appreciate any help!

You need to find a good apartment locator, if you are coming very soon, you may be able to find a summer sublet around UT campus -- the public transportation in that area is very good and you are close to downtown, etc. You can get great summer rates in apartment complexes that generally serve the student population. Locators know the best deals and you don't pay a cent.

Joey, try looking up Cap Metro. It will tell you where the bus and rail lines are and schedules. Good luck to you, i think its great to be car free or as much as possible

Joey, forget it, Austin's rent is to high for a single person, no transportation and what it has is not reliable, you will need a car or a scooter to get around downtown since no transportation to cover all of Austin. Do not rely on the people they do not like outsiders and the cost of living here is high compared to the wage salary it has to offer.
Anyway good luck if you decide to move here.

Why would you move anywhere sight unseen? When you get here will you order your wife from a mailorder bride service? Maybe you'll even buy your dog over Ebay.

Anyways, good luck and welcome!
