Hello everyone,

I will be moving to Austin, TX as soon as I sell my home. I've been looking at jobs in the IT field on and off. I wanted to know how is the job market there for people with an IT background?

Thank you in advance.

Dawn

I think "IT" is simply too vague a term to answer your question well.

If IT to you means managing and administering computers, networks, and databases I do not think Austin is a great town for that. Austin isn't the home of many very large companies with 1000s of servers. It doesn't mean this kind of IT doesn't present opportunities. Everything from law firms, to the state, to school districts hire IT people. So jobs exist. But there are many people in Austin with these skills.

If IT means developing software - Austin is normally a great place - although slow right now. Austin is still an active place though for new software companies.

Hoffdano made some good points. If you're referring to networking, network management, servers, systems administration, infrastructure etc., forget it. There are some companies here which do systems and hardware development, but they hire straight out of UT and A&M, and most are branch offices. IT jobs here are not very stable.

"IT" here means business IT. Java, web pages, and databases.

In a word - innundated. Yes, there are jobs here, but there are far more people with IT experience than there are jobs. My husband is the Vice President, IT / CTO of a company here in town and gets at least 400 resumes every time he posts a job.
