We are looking for liberal thinking areas in Austin or a good mix of moderates who can discuss both sides. Any ideas? My husband would like to be on Lake Travis, but I don't know if that is right either. We live on the MS Gulf Coast now and are being killed by insurance since Katrina.

What about the Belton or Lago Vista areas?

I have not lived there but I consider Lago Vista a fairly conservative area based on the few times we have visited there.

Belton is right next to Fort Hood, possibly the largest Army post in the US. Before the breakup of the Soviet Union, Fort Hood was billed as the largest military base in the free world. I'm guessing its not very liberal.

Might want to look into Austin Lake Estates on Lake Austin. It's closer-in to town, funky little area that is surrounded by super-expensive megahomes and neighborhoods. Austin Lake Estates itself is not very expensive, however the houses are older (although many have been redone) and of various build quality.
Another similar neighborhood is on the north side of Lake Austin, called Apache Shores.

Just an FYI, home owner insurance rates in Texas are some of the highest in the country!

What does being socially liberal mean?

I beg to differ completely.

Socially liberal means supporting left-leaning social issues, like gay rights, legal abortion, freedom of religion, supporting stem cell research, affirmative action, and other issues that the Democrats tend to support other than their fiscal liberalism.

Austin is very much a socially liberal town, particularly when compared to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, not to mention anywhere in rural Texas.

Austin has the most gay-friendly culture of Texas, it's the most "hippie" town in Texas, it's one of the most religiously tolerant towns in Texas, and it has a better race record than most of Texas. The presence of UT really contributes to this.

Fiscal liberalism and conservativism tends to come and go in many people as the economy wanes and booms. However, people don't tend to make drastic changes on their social issue--one reason Austin has been Democrat-dominated for decades.

Have you even traveled to the gay scene in Dallas and Houston? I'm pretty sure theirs is 5x larger than the microscopic scene in Austin.

UT doesn't contribute to anything. It's a college with a great mascot that draws in a lot of money.

I'm not in Texas anymore but that's at least what I know from others.

lets just say, no place in Texas will you find a totally liberal enviorment but Austin will come the cloest and it probably doesn't make much difference where you live in and around the city. Dallas and Houston have liberal areas, but are still pretty conservative.
