Hello everyone,

I've decided to teach myself Java, in order to make myself more marketable for my move to Texas. I've heard from others that Austin has more than enough Java programmers. Can anyone tell me what is in demand in the area of IT for Austin?

Thank you in advance.

Dee

There are more programmers than jobs right now in Austin.
The big companies are not hiring; if anything they are laying off.

I don't follow the smaller companies though. Maybe someone else has insight into that area.

Getting a certification would be the best use of your time. There are still a ton of jobs for systems administrators in Austin
Go for a MSCE, CCNA, Etc.

Where?
I just got my CCNA, and I've been scouring every source for Austin jobs I can find. All of them require way more experience than I have.

I need to get my foot in the door somewhere.

Highly recommend you go .NET instead of Java if you are looking to get hired in Austin. Most companies here are .NET shops and the most that aren't are slowly migrating towards .net. The few that aren't moving that direction, you wouldn't want to work there anyways...

Although I don't agree that most companies here are .NET - I do agree .NET is growing faster and the skills probably in more demand. There is still a ton of Java work in Austin - but there are even more people with Java skills.

Where is all this work in Austin you refer to. there is an occasional job posting, but stop telling people there is any significant amount of IT work in Austin. There just isn't right now. There are few if any growth markets for IT.

However, if you insist on IT as a career path, I'd see sys admin jobs, network admin jobs, etc. are more numerous than programming jobs.

It will be a waste of time. There are plenty of skilled yet unemployed Java programmers in Austin right now. Many had extensive Java programming back in the college days. If you were not a CS major at a good CS school, you are unlikely to come close to a level of proficiency/sophistication that CS grads would normally achieve by their senior year.

I think it's fair to say that there are thousands of programmers (maybe more) in Austin waiting to land an IT job.

Forget Austin. In fact, forget Texas.

IT workers here who have been laid off are not stupid and uninformed - they have been studying too.

fact of the matter is, there are NOT enough job openings for all who are qualified. Some laid-off/unemployed IT workers are beginning to move out of Austin.
