Ok, We will be in Austin later this month the one very important question I have yet to ask is. Where is the best public golf courses and what are the prices?

Don't have the daily fees at hand but Avery Ranch Golf Club is a VERY nice course...pretty darned green all things considered. If you are in north-north Austin, I highly recommend it(partial disclosure: I'm a member and get to play a couple of times a month). I'm guessing the heat won't be anything new to you.

Will be living in No.Austin. Heat doesn't bother me lived in Vegas. Courses around Reno and Tahoe are usually a bit pricey probally due to the fact we can only golf half a year or so.

check out Texas golfer ( I think)
http://www.texasgolfermagazine.com/
local reviews of courses around the state

http://www.texasgolferguide.com/

http://www.texasoutside.com/golfBest.html

the Leander course is pretty good
several courses outside Austin that might be do-able on weekends--
Bastrop has one that is good ColoVista I think
the old course around Aquarina in San Marcos is the college course now--don't know if you can play it or not
Seguin used to have a great 9 hole course along the river but the floods several years ago took down many of the beautiful pecan trees and don't think it is as well maintained as it used to be

there are several public courses in Austin that are pretty good and some that are semi-private that are open to public...some offer reduced rates due to heat this time of the year
plenty to choose from

and IMO courses around Reno and Tahoe are pricey because they are in an "entertainment" area and people come on expense accounts a lot of the time and don't care what the price is or they are tied to resorts where again people expect to pay through the nose---so they do
there are other areas of the country where golf is fairly seasonal and their rates aren't as high as Reno or Tahoe

First Avery is a great course, although on the pricey side. However there are several muni's that while not Avery & Teravista quality are none the less pretty good.

If you go to Golf512.com then you can get some pretty good deals. The only draw back is you have to have a minimum of two players.

Star Ranch on 685 in Hutto is a good golf course on the north side.

Default Falconhead

I'll second the recommendation for Falconhead. The rates are here:
Austin, Texas Golf Course - Falconhead Golf Club - Austin Golf Tournaments, Banquets, Weddings, and Membership
The higher altitude definitely makes a difference, compared to courses down close to Austin. There's more of a breeze; the air's drier. Just be sure to find out when the greens are being aerated. They use the method that turns them into pegboards. I'm a committed walker, but I always ride at Falconhead. I don't think they even allow walking at most times, but even if they did, it's usually a long way from a green to the next tee.
