This might seem like an odd question, but does anyone have any recommendations for a large animal vet (likely someone in a more rural area, doesn't have to be right in town) that could do a tooth extraction on a dog? My Lab broke the tip off one of his top canines, and I really can't pay the $800+ the doggy dentist 'roughly' estimated for the procedure.

I ask because when I lived in Michigan we used to have our horses' vet take care of things like this for the dogs. It was just as effective, significantly cheaper, and these vets typically had a no-nonsense approach to things which I really liked.

Thanks in advance!

Where in the Austin area are you located? I have a few names, but they serve different areas around Austin.

I'm currently in North Austin, but moving to the Travis Heights area at the end of the month. The best area would all depend on how soon I can get him in (which will hopefully be before the month ends, but you never know).

Thank you so much for the quick response, by the way- I didn't know whether people on here would think it's an insane idea (the people working at my current vet's office seem to think I'm a lunatic).

Okay, large animal vets that I know are Nancy St. Peters (Georgetown Equine Hospital), Dave Garza (he's in the Dripping Springs area, or was, some time back), and I've heard good recommendations (but have not used them) on both price and care about Georgetown Veterinary Hospital. We take our dogs to Koy Animal Clinic in Georgetown, but they're not large animal vets.

Almost forgot - John Holmstrom, in Georgetown (well, Hutto), is a large animal vet who does horses, cows, and dogs and cats.

I cannot stand Dr. St. Peters.

Dr. Reicher is great, he will come to your place, do dogs, horses, etc. Dr. Holmstrom is good too. But I think they both stay more in the Hutto/Georgetown/Pflugerville area.
