This is a very controversial topic among Texans! My favorites are Iron Works and Stubbs. Some will state on here that Salt Lick is the best BBQ! It's a bit of a drive and I don't think it is worth it. The ambience is nice but the food was not that great. The BBQ sauce tasted like gravy to me. Just my humble opinion.

The best BBQ within the city limits is probably Sam's.
2000 East 12th, 478-0378; 10am-3am Mon-Sat; 10am-10pm Sun

The area it resides within has been known to be a little dicey (i.e. drugs, prostitution, & murders) at times but visiting anytime before dark is probably safe.

I wasn't too impressed by Sam's, but maybe it was just an off day. My favorite is Ben's Long Branch, also on the East Side. Ironworks is also way up there. For the best in the region go to Lockhart, the self professed BBQ capitol of TX-- about a half hour away. My favorite spot there is Smitty's.

We just got back to NC from Austin yesterday. We ate at a few BBQ places, and our favorite, by far was Smokey Mo's. They have four locations. (Leander, Cedar Park, Round Rock and in Austin at Parmer and McNeil. We ate at the Cedar Park location TWICE on a 5 day trip. We went to The Salt Lick, and were very unimpressed, especially with all the hype. We've found a lot of places are more about atmosphere than the actual BBQ. Mo's isn't like that at all. It's all about the food, as it should be!

My husband, who was born and raised in North Carolina said, "That's the best damn brisket I've ever had."

OK - I know a lot of BBQ aficionados are going to jump down my throat and call this blasphemous, but I really liked Rudy's BBQ. They're a chain (not a mom n' pop joint), but I liked their food. They catered a party for me and they were FABULOUS. I don't even like BBQ and I like this place.

They have a website and lots of locations all over town.

OK - let the insults begin - I know you BBQ snobs want to read me the Riot Act...

I've heard several people say Rudy's is very good, and I've found them to be good. Still, in the Austin area I like Salt Lick the best. Not just the atmosphere, either -- I like the Q from the Airport & 360 locations just as well (it all comes from the Driftwood place, I think).

A new place we've found that we like is Uncle Billy's on Barton Springs. It's a brewpub, too, and the beer is great. So are the margaritas.

Of course, all of the above places are second to some of the great BBQ you can get in Llano, Lockhart, and Taylor (Louie Mueller's). Clem Mikesa's in Temple is pretty good, too.
