They just showed highlights of the AFL champions here on ESPN and they look so silly in their 80's style short shorts. It looks like a bad Wham video. I was in Australia for 3 weeks a few years ago and I like Rugby and Aussie rules but it's such an oxymoron to have these warriors prance around in such dorky shorts. Just my .2 cents on an odd sports phenomenon.
You want to see what "Aussie Rules" shorts looked like in the 1980's?
They're actually somewhat larger now and more comfortable, Compared to the older style shorts.

Aussie Rules and Rugby are contact sports unlike basketball. You could not wear those near trousers they wear in basketball because it would make it easier to tackle. In American football they wear skin tight pants for the same reason. They're just longer.
they wear short shorts so A) they are less likely to get pulled down in a tackle.
b) so they can run the full legnth of the field with ease
c) its harder for the opposition to grab skin than fabric
I am watching a soccer match now with Liverpool at Boston. This is the first time I am seeing longer shorts. So stupid this trend to longer shorts. Are they trying to prevent too much sun on the skin? I love the shorter shorts. Game over Bos 2 Liverpool 1.

It's better for kicking. And I think the 'shorts' one gets from having a very prominent tanline (like you see on some of those streakers) looks way dorkier.
