Australia's experiencing a population boom not seen since the 60's, according to recent reports from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

There's now 21,779,000 million of us in this wide brown land. Our population increased by 439,100 in the year to March, or just over 2%, among the fastest in the developed world.

278,200 people arrived from overseas, and there was a natural increase of 160,800 (a mini-baby boom).

The population of our states as of 31 March, 2009:

W.A.: 2,224,000
Qld: 4,380,000
NSW: 7,076,000
Vic: 5,403,000
S.A.: 1,618,000
Tas: 501,800
NT: 223,100
ACT: 349,900

W.A. was the fastest growing state, followed by Queensland.

W.A. at 2,532,400 sq km., is five times the size of Texas but Texas has more people in it than our entire country does. Texas: 24+million. Oz: 21,779,000.

Perth now has 1.6 million residents.

Next largest cities in W.A.:
Mandurah: 78,612. Mandurah is the nation's fastest growing city at 5.3%.
Bunbury: 63,202
Geraldton: 35,361
Kalgoorlie-Boulder: 31,509

Good for the economy, according to some. Bad for the environment, according to others.

Like to know where the 287,000 immigrants are comming from, certainly noticed a large increase the number of indians living in Brisbane recently.

Mandurah is definately growing fast! But that's because it's very popular with retirees and seachangers.

I think Australia will continue to boom. We enjoyed our time there (moved from America). The COL was great, I heard prices have increased a lot since though.
