Sydney would be similar to Seattle, San Diego, Los Angeles ... of course it depends on which part of the city. It's cheaper than San Francisco and New York, but still expensive. I can't speak for Melbourne though.
When I visited Melbourne many years ago, I found the cost of living in Melbourne to be lower than that of California. But things may changed and I don't know if that is still the case today.
