"Anything you can do, I can do better" might be playing on the loudspeakers in Korea right now, as Hyundai is apparently set to introduce a bored out version of the formerly 4.6-liter Tau V8 for action in the Genesis Sedan and Equus. More interestingly, this new 5.0 may do duty in the Genesis Coupe as well. This new 5.0-liter V8 was mentioned during a media event at Hyundai R&D and if the claimed numbers are legit, this Mustang-challenger will produce a few more ponies than the Blue Oval bruiser. Where Ford is getting 412 horsepower from its five-point-oh in the 2011 Mustang, Hyundai says its 5.0-liter V8 will be packing 429 hp when it reaches production.

yeah but the ford's 412HP is underated car & driver dyno tested it and said the motor was making close to 430HP and the ford is not even direct injected yet if they did that 450-475HP is in very easy range and they may even squeak out a 1-2 extra MPGs from it. I also see chevy stepping up the camaro performance with the Z28 which I hope will have the 7.0 505HP LS7 under the hood and be on a 150-200lbs diet

but that will be great for hyundai fans and it will be able to beat the current G37, 370Z, Camaro SS and the challenger SRT8 not bad for a car company who made little 90HP econo boxes a decade ago.

got to love the modren pony car wars were 400HP cars can be had for a little over $30K.

and 10-15 years ago those horsepower numbers were corvette Z06, dodge viper and fearri F355/F360 territory.

I'm curious to know the torque numbers. Interesting Hyundai is entering the "muscle" car segment of the market with a 5.0L V8.

HP is an artifact of torque... what are those ratings?

I think it says in the article the output figures being reported are 429 hp at 6,500 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm, with an 11.5:1 compression ratio. so it seems it won't have much of a bottom end torque curve. while the 2011 mustang GT is making it's peak torque (390 lb-ft) @ 4,000 rpm...

It's nice to see Hyundai attempting to spread their wings a little more. I hope it works out for them.

Thats kind of what I figured.... semi-artificial HP ratings for bragging purposes. Power band charts are needed for true comparisons here. Thats a pretty high compression ratio though...

I think it's all about proving to people they're not just some brand that makes cheap cars. I'm sure some people will scoff at the idea of a Hyundai challenging a Mustang. Even if they can't quite reach that mark, the fact that they're getting closer will make people take the company more seriously.

I would say if this goes on sale the infiniti G37 and nissian 370Z would really need to bring out a V-8 or a twin turbo V6 option to compete because the current 3.7-liter V6 330HP in the infiniti G37 coupe has no chance to compete with a 430HP V-8 and since the Genesis looks so much like the G37 and is $15K-20k cheaper it will be a hard sell for nissian/infiniti dealers.

Agreed...and I would add this car will probably hurt sales of the other foreign automakers like Infiniti and Nissan more than it would the domestic market of camaros, mustangs, and chargers. The domestic market tends to keep a lot of loyal followers. I'm on my 3rd stang already hehe
