Just had to post after going to the opening day for a few hours today. If you ever get the chance to go to one, GO. Absolutely fascinating for any one who is even slightly interested in cars or motorcycles. An amazing variety of vehicles, from the guy wanting to see how fast his new Corvette will go (170-ish), to the teams who have put hundreds of thousands of dollars into their contraptions (and those go over 250). The bikes can go well over 300.

Our local abandoned runway (it was a B-52 base) is 2 miles long.... these cars and bikes use it up quickly.....

If you haven't seen it I highly recommend you find a DVD titled The World's Fastest Indian, a true story of a New Zealander whose dream was to own the world's fastest Indian motorcycle. He made it to Bonneville salt flats and set some records that I believe still stand. I've never made it to race week at Bonneville but stopped there on a road trip once, a place that has an eerie beauty in its starkness. It may not be the end of the world but you can surely see it from there.

When the movie first came out I talked a librarian at my local library into getting it, she and several others told me that even though neither they nor their husbands were into motorcycles or racing, they all loved the movie. The lead actor, Sir Anthony Hopkins said at the time it was his favorite role.

That was a great movie.
(BTW I figured out that there is a category for racing on C-D, under another main heading. So maybe this thread is in the wrong place. But then again, it's really not so much racing as just seeing how fast your vehicle will go............racing against yourself, I guess. At any rate, got to see some AMAZING vehicles (including home-made hot rods from as far back as 1910).

There used to be a WW II training base about 2 hours from me where they held speed trials, I gave up street riding due to local roads being too flat/straight to interest me and I'd considered building a bike to run there a few times a year. Sadly, they moved their meets to probably 12+ hours from me, just not as enticing any longer.
