I drive a 2000 Hyundai. Took it to the local carwash to have a paste wax but they tried to upsell me to get a claying/wax for $90. Can't afford it, so he said he'd do it for $75 which I still can't afford now. I live in SoCal where everything is more expensive. Would this prolong the finish of my car which is always parked outside so maybe something to consider doing in the future? Does the price sound reasonable? I would probably have to tip 20%

Something that takes me a weekend afternoon to do. $75 seems a pretty good deal for the time/effort involved. Assuming it's a well reviewed place.

Yep, a deal at $75. Anyone who has done it themselves knows it is time consuming and a lot of work. You figure, $75 is about the cost of a meal out for two at a decent place, so it is not a lot of money these days.

No offense, but it's a 17 year old Hyundai, not a Ferrari. If you are balking at $75 why even do it? BTW I drive a Honda, so I'm not mocking you.

Why not just do a thorough wash yourself, spend some extra time getting the tar and grime off and hand-wax it. It will look as good to you and everyone on the road and the finish will be fine. It will cost you $10.00 tops if you already have the wax product.

Yep, that clay and wax is only going to protect your car. And they're probably using cheaper wax that will last only a few weeks. Clay/wax without paint correction is like putting lipstick on a pig. You have to get to the underlying issue (paint marring and scratches) before trying to protect it. That is why full details when done correctly are so expensive, it takes a lot of work and skill to make that paint shine again.

In my area, that would be $500+.....$75, I'd be suspicious he's doing what he claims

$500 is expensive. I get my Camaro detailed twice a year at the best shop around and it runs about $250 for a complete interior/exterior job. In between I use a liquid wax and instant detailer. The car always looks top notch.

$75 does seem kind of cheap and I'd also be leery of what kind of job you're getting.

It's your car. Only you can decide if it's what you want for your car.

It's your car, your call. But if $75 is too expensive then I wouldn't bother. It's southern CA, right? So if all the paint were to fall off tomorrow... the car would still last for years. Because you guys don't have rust.

I'd skip and save the money. I have newer cars that I don't bother with waxing at all--not worth my time nor money, not when New England rust will kill 'em in a few years anyhow.
