The 2-seater AMX was not big or heavy. Well, not that heavy. It came with a 390-cu-in engine.
The AMX was a beautiful car, fast, great lines, and innovative. It came with a 390 CID and factory headers. It shared many of the sister Javelin model features but was much lighter. The fastest were the cold air induction models. It cornered fairly well given its wide stance and low to the ground profile. Too bad this fine car came to late to save AMC, much like the Studabaker Hawk of a decade earlier.

That's what I'm saying. But some of the musclecar fans here seem to think that with the right amount of elbow grease, a '72 Monte Carlo can run and hide from a Boxster on a track.
Someone was buliding old muscle cars into corner carvers for a while freaking things were pricey as hell though.
I almost don't even want to put the AMX as a pony car, but I could see it being drawn to that with comparsions to Javelin and later becoming an option on the Javelin. I think the 300 would be worth mentioning as muscle as it initially at least shared one portion off the mid line Chrysler and eventually had 4 door offerings.
On backcountry roads almost all American muscle cars would stomp any exotic. With maybe the exception of the light rear ended Camaro, any car made in the USA was built to do roads with little potholes and puddles and not end up wrapped around a telephone pole.
One little hole in the road and your Euro car is done.
