Hi all. I'm about to get my first new car, but I have no idea what to get. I am interested in compact and midsized sedans. My main criteria is reliability and gas mileage. I want something that I can put a lot of miles on it without worrying about it having a problem and sucking away my wallet. I assume this would would gear my search towards asian automobiles(Suburu, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, etc.).

Anybody have any suggestions about what models I should be looking at?

Honda Fit. Ford Fiesta or Fusion. What I would be looking at if in your shoes. Although I prefer big three, the Honda Fit is an all around well designed and very useful small car that does well in almost every category.

I agree with Cold, but also look into the Honda Insight. It is a Hybrid that gets 40mpg City/43 Highway but many drivers are stating they get closer to 50. Right now my wife in mostly city driving is getting about 44. Can get a brand new one for just over 21k.

I hear good things about the newer Hyundais, never owned one though.

If you're looking for good gas mileage as one of your two main points, I'd probably disregard the Subaru. Though their new 2012 Impreza allegedly is the most fuel efficient AWD car on the market, it still only gets 36 mpg.

Reliability and gas mileage: Toyota or Honda. Buy one a few years old without too many miles on it. These cars last and you'll save yourself thousands of dollars.

2011 Civic or previous years. My 08 is the best car I have ever owned. Driven cross country and everywhere between. Subaru's are also great. The 2012 Civic, in my opinion, is hideous so maybe try to get a deal on some 2010 or 2011 leftovers.

I've been hearing good things about the Hyundai Elantra, Honda Fit, and Ford Fiesta. Anyone have insight on these three cars. I'm a little more apt to trust the honda name tbh.
