Anyone have experience with how noisy a convertible is at highway speed?

Looking at an older Mustang(1994 and up) as a 'fun car'....we haven't had too much fun in our lives for a while....

Take a few out of a test drive. Every is going to have a different idea of what level of noise is "acceptable".

we picked up a Honda s2000 for a toy after we moved down here, yeah there is some road noise but to be honest most of the time it's got the top dropped anyhow.
It may help some if a top has a liner, and the tires are thinner hiway tires and not wide performance rubber.
Now near every convertible will likely have some shakes and rattles, but as noted earlier depends on what is acceptable to ya

Note we drove Miatas as well, and unless it was a hardtop version, the 2 small cars were about same for noise. I cant speak for larger or more "luxurious" models as to what they'll have.

Looking at something that can hold three people.

Not actually sure if the Mustang would meet that requirement,it has a back seat but as to it being useable for seating is another matter.

it may work fine, depends on who rides in back though lol

I do see a lot of Toyota Solara convertibles down here, which is "basically" a 2 dr Camry so you may find those have the room and features as well as a decent price

I would recommend you pick up an 05 or later model. The 04 and earlier cars are to old FOX platform that has been around since the late 70's. The newer cars are light years ahead in performance, handling, quality, chassis rigidity etc etc... Unless you plan to heavily modify the chassis I would avoid the 04 and earlier mustangs.

Mustangs are a little tight in the back. If you have an adult or teenager who will ride back there on a regular basis I would look at a Sebring.

As far as road noise goes, I worked at a Chrysler dealership 10 years ago and I noticed no difference in road noise between the Sebring convertible and the Sebring sedan. I'm sure other modern convertibles with the interior liner would be the same. But as a former convertible owner (1966 Galaxie 500), I can tell you that over time problems tend to develop with the fitment of weatherstripping. This is something that can be corrected easily and relatively inexpensively, but I just wanted to point it out.

But, as someone else said, the whole point of buying a ragtop is to run it with the top down most of the time!
