I had a 1989 Maxima SE and 1991 Maxima SE. Two of the best cars I EVER owned. Ran like sewing machines, comfortable in long distance trips and exceptional power and fuel economy. I miss my Maximas.
Do they still make the Maxima with that weird sky light? It ran the length of the hood line and always looked weird to me.
You mean the roof line. Yes it does look weird, and although I haven't spent any time with one, it can't be practical, or it would have been in use years ago.
The G37 uses a completely different platform than the Maxima. It is smaller, RWD, and much sportier. It is also noisier and rougher riding, which is the tradeoff for the sportiness.
Saying the G37 is similar to the Maxima is like saying the FX is similar to the Murano...they're all vastly different vehicles that cater to different markets.
At least as far as styling, the newest Maxima has too much......personality......and IMO its typical buyers aren't the same as those who would buy a Taurus, Impala but especially the sedate Avalon. And if the Maxima still handles like its previous generations (I used to read several car mags cover-to-cover but stopped around 2000), I think it's probably also too sporty/athletic for those same buyers.
I've always like the Maximas, except for the (2001 or so?) model with its weird oval tailamps and overall blah styling, ever since they debuted. I almost bought a loaded 1988 model back in the late 90s.....until I found out it had been in a flood.
All I can say is that I see much fewer Maxima's on the road. In the 90's and early 00's they were more popular. It has got to do with pricing and competition. They were bullet proof, the only reason I stayed away from them was the timing belt-very difficult to get to.
Its funny but in teh 1990s the MAxima was called the 4DSC "4 door sports car" and poor mans 5 series. It was superb for the price and pretty sporty even though it was FWD.
Nissan brought us the Skyline aka G35/G37 over and today that is the real 4DSC from them since its RWD and uses the same platform as the 350/370Z. So the platforms are totally different.
What is crazy is the new Maxima, IMO looks better and has even better features and options. Its a fantastic car for the money. The G37 is also a fantastic car for the money and far sportier.
Nissan has two similar priced/sized cars aimed at different markets and both do well.

What is the difference between the FX and Murano? They seem to me like very similar vehicles that cater to different markets through different marketing, features, and styling.
