I'm in the market for the same so I'm looking at older Acura TL, RL, InfinityI30/35, Nissan Maxima.
Accords and Camries will do but they're a bit too bland for me.

Just don't go too old on the TL as it had transmission issues from 01-03. The RL does not have the same issues as it is from Japan, whereas the TLs with transmission issues were from Ohio.

I'm going to vote for the Avalon. I owned one, and have another family member who owns one. Aside from being decent looking and having nice appointments, it's a very spacious car. You won't crowd rear seat passengers no matter how back you like to move the driver's seat.
The Volvo S60 is also a great car, 2004-09 2.5L turbo. As already mentioned, all wheel drive and R series should be avoided for maintenance reasons. The S80 5 cylinder 2.5L front wheel drive (identical powertrain as S60 2.5 turbo) is also very good, and larger than the S60. ONLY the 2.5L front wheel drive models though. The 07+ S80, current generation, seems to have been a good car so far, but avoid the V8, all wheel drive, and T6 models for maintenance costs. Most of the nicely maintained 05+ S80s are probably out of budget range anyway.
I've owned a couple of the Volvos too. They have a better road feel than the Avalon, IMO, but the Avalon is probably the better choice for maintenance costs. I'm considering buying another.
Hi everyone........I bought a vehicle..........2005 Toyota Avalon XLS, $11,000.......a bit higher than I wanted in miles 122,000 but still a great bargain.
Thanks for your help........My car is great! Plenty of leg room and very spacious!

Grandpa Pipes, I've done all of what is requested for fuel efficiency in the links you provided. I am just ready for another vehicle. Mine is getting old and I prefer to have 2 cars instead of 1 in case something happens to one I have a back up. It's been very valuable to have that second car on numerous occassions so I don't feel I would be throwing away my money. My second car recently went out and needs too much work on it so I would prefer to invest that money into another vehicle.
vmaxnc I should say I just don't like 2 door cars. I don't like having to move my seat when someone wants to get in the back seat. The access is too limited in my opinion.
My idea of good MPG is at least 20 city and anything above that highway.
So far I've looked into Toyota Avalon's, Chrysler 300...........any thoughts?
My dad just bought a low-mileage 2005 Cadillac DeVille - with only 40,000 miles - for about $10,000. Something like that might be worth looking at.
Take a look at the Chrysler Sebring (2007-2011). My wife has a 2007 model with 2.4L engine. Using cruise control and modest acceleration, my wife averages 24 mpg city. It has large head and leg room.
