Safety inspection question in NY (2013, emissions, car, DMV)

my registration for my new car expires on 1/7/13 but the safety inspection sticker is punched for January of 2013 with no actual day noted. there is no emissions inspection required next year since the car would be less than 2 years old

do i need to have the safety inspection done by 1/7 or do i have until the end of January?

i imagine that i would receive the renewal stuff in the mail around December

i tried calling NY DMV today but as usual their lines are jammed up
