I'm also confident in the reliability of a well maintained turbo but if mine goes bad its just another excuse to go bigger (again)

No, it is not safe to assume. One of my coworkers had the turbo die in his early 2000s Volvo at 90,000 miles.

Look at when the manufacturer's warranty expires. That may give you a hint.

Are we to assume, based on your nugget of wisdom, that everything is expected to die shortly after the warranty expires?

I'm not saying this will be the case for all premature failures but the vast majority that I've seen have been due to poor maintenance and abuse.

Your "I knew a guy" logic is flawed.

There's no reason not to assume the turbo in a modern car that is properly maintained will last over 100k miles.

In many cases - yes. Would you pay $40,000 for a new car that only had a 12,000 mile warranty (like in the "old" days)?

Please inform me of the degradation analysis you performed to come up with this result. And "not last long" is a pretty arbitrary amount of time
