Based on what I've owned (dozens of cars, but not hundreds), I'd consider them to be fine cars--better than Hyundai or Mitsubishi, on par with any Ford, GM, or Nissan, but not quite as good a Honda, Toyota, or Subaru. (And no, I couldn't compare with any European cars, because on my cost-to-pain-in-ass analysis, I've never found one that seemed like a good deal TO ME, therefore, I've never owned one.)

Ford, GM on the same level as Nissan ..... I strongly disagree.
From the friends and family members I know that have Mazda 3's and Mazda 6's, they all like them and haven't really had any major issues. They are quite fun to drive. One negative is they do seem to have a little more road noise. For the price they definitely compete with the other brands.
I never own a Mazda, but when I have to get a rental car, I ask specifically for a Mazda6. For a WWD with a small engine, it's exciting to drive. The driving dynamics are near delicious; took one to WV hollows on a business trip for a week. I did not need coffee to wake up.

True... Ford and GM are above Nissan!
