Wow, that is just insane....I would look elsewhere if I got a 6k quote for brakes.
On a side note, brakes last a lot longer if you drive with a little sense. How many people do I see racing past me.......to be first at that red light 1/2 block ahead.
On my 05 CLS55 I did the job myself and it was still $2600 bucks. These cars are not worth the money. Before that I had an 03 E55 and it had the same braking system, I paid 4k at an idy for that brake job. I'm done with these cars. I bought a Hyundai Sonata and never looked back. These cars are s%$ once the warranty is gone, that's why you can pick them up at a "good price" 3 years later.
$70k is also middle of the of the non-AMG line. The cost of brake replacement isn't going to be nearly as high, probably little more than a Honda. The point isn't that it's a $70k car. It's the same with Corvettes... regular Corvette including Z06, not that expensive. ZR1? You're looking at $5000 for parts to replace the rotors and shoes. People buying AMGs are either money-no-object egomaniacs that must have the best or actually care about the performance. If they're just buying it to drive sedately around town in and occasionally floor it to impress the ladies, the brakes are total over kill. There's plenty of cheaper aftermarket replacements that will work perfectly fine. On the other hand, if you try and even an under-powered Honda with the $20 cheapest I could find brake pads on a canyon run... well, they could be the most expensive brake pads you ever bought. There's a good chance that type of person also has ten-year-old brake fluid as well, so it should be an entertaining race to see whether the brake fluid boils or the brakes fade first.
The irony is that if you look at the AMG forums, the performance guys all ditch the OEM brakes and go aftermarket as soon as the brakes need to be replaced. The aftermarket solutions are cheaper and perform better.
People also keep saying that these prices are for the carbon-ceramic brakes...that is not the case. These prices are for the standard AMG brakes and pads. The ones that are carbon-ceramic cost around $8k-$10k for a brake job at the dealer.
Changing brakes on any car is universal. Lean to do the job yourself & safe a ton of money & beong ripped off by the dealers & independant shops.
