What's the best time to get best price on a car: right before Christmas/New Year holidays or right after?

Normally the end of the month is the best time, so the week between X-mas and the new year.

My last purchase was on the last day of the year that they were open, when I offered $5,000 below sticker and it was accepted the first try. It helped that there was a snowstorm the few days before so they hadn't sold much all week.

That's assuming you buy new and from dealer, right? 2 months into the new year. 2-3. They have to clear lots for new stock coming in.
Btw when you go there, wonder around. There's normally a "secret" lot tucked in somewhere. Kind of lower shelf in a grocery store. They always keep expensive items at eye level. Salesman will always show the "front" cars, as they are priced highest. If you find that lot, you may find better deals.

I have gotten some great deals the week between Christmas and the New Year because business tends to be much slower in December. If the dealer wants to hit a sales target to qualify for an annual incentive from the manufacturer, they will tend to want to sell a vehicle. The last week of any month can be a good time to buy, but December adds the annual incentive, such that a dealer may be more willing to sell a vehicle. If looking to buy in the next couple of weeks, I would definitely go shopping from the 26th to the 31st.

Go buy a Camaro or Mustang on the Dec 31st in the middle of a snow storm..... They'll give the car away just to get out of going on a test drive with ya....

Ask me how I know

Otherwise I would go on the last day of the month toward the end of the yr and buy the previous yrs model... Right now would be a great time to buy a 2012 model..

Yeah, particularly for a "summer" kind of car, this week between Christmas and New Year tends to be a good time to get a deal particularly on a car from some sort of dealer.

Individual sellers may be motivated as well.

I have always called this week "Wolf Week". So gather up your pack, and get out there, happy hunting!

I'm in the market for a Subaru Outback and it seems the dealers are giving considerable discounts ($2k below invoice on the 2013 model) w/o any "known" manufacturer discounts/incentives. Looks like I'll be picking one up before the year is out.
