I actually really like big sloppy old RWD sedans. I will buy/drive anything on the Ford Panther platform. (Grand Marquis, Crown Vic, Town Car) Cheap to buy used, reliable drivetrains, and can definitely take a few hits. I know 'em inside and out and can work on them with relative ease. Big and comfortable for road trips, safe for my family, and really not bad fuel economy for a V8. Actually bought one new once due to some huge dealer discounts in my early 20s, the salesman said I was the youngest person he had ever seen buy one, most of his buyers were at minimum 50 years older than me. Oh well.
I chose my car after drooling over it for 7 years. I fell in love with the Subaru Impreza STI since it came out in the US in 2004. AWD, turbo, the 2011 model which I currently own is rated at 305 HP, 4 door sedan, practical yet extremely fun to drive. I would say it has a Jekyll and Hyde personality, I look for any single excuse in the book to just go out and drive it.
Driving used to be fun but now there's too much traffic and idiots out there these days.
i went through The partyvan phase, the muscle car phase, the sports car phase,and the luxury car phase,now its just about getting from A-B reliably and economically in a car that i dont mind if it gets dings and dents from idiots who dont have a clue.
Toyota Yaris is working just fine..
It's definitely a part of my personality. I dreamed of owning my first one. Always regretted not getting a diesel. Searched high and low for a low mileage diesel version. Found her and won't let her go!
I agree that I used to really love to drive before so many crazy, impatient, aggressive drivers.
I drive a VW bug now--a previous version, in 1966 with no efficient heater and no AC, was my first car. So many people at gas stations and one panhandler at an intersection about my age, have told me they want one and become rather misty-eyed recalling theirs in years past. They always comment, "They were so much fun!" and I say, "They still are, especially my turbo!"
As I get older, I care less and less about cars. I still get 2-3 car magazines a month but simply scan through them, not reading every page like I used to. I have spent crazy money on cars, once owning 200K in new cars at the same time! I soon grew tired of trips to the dealer, the $500 tires (yeah, each tire was $500) and the constant upkeep/care those things needed. I had plenty of fun and still enjoy cars but now I am looking at the path of least resistance, as in what vehicle will I get the most use out of with the least headache for the least cost.
I have always tended to buy new (last used car was in 1997ish and it was a 1995 BMW M3) but I tend to keep them a long time so the used car savings amortized over a 5-8 year 150K mile period is minimal. I still look at them but for me to buy something I have to wash by hand, nurture by night (garage) and want to pay for.......well the list is shrinking!
If money was no object and I could have a 8-12 car "car barn/mancave garage" then this would be a short list:

That would be about 1.2mm off the top of my head plus the building to house them, so figure 1.5mm budget to get the ball rolling (or wheels in this case). In the mean time I will just enjoy my new Platinum F150.....
Just a cheap reliable vehicle, my restored 1979 Toyota Corolla SR 2dr with air conditioning to get to point A and back!
