I have a 1988 toyota corolla as my 2nd car with 120,000 miles. It is sentimential to me. Five years ago I spent $2000 to fix it up. Since then every I have some kind or repair. This year it was a alternator and now I need a $900 repair for the exhaust system. Do you agree it is time to get rid of car and donate it. I kept the Toyota to just go local and have it for a emergency only when I bought my 2000 Honda. We always had one car but I got used to having 2 cars even though it is not a necessity..
My primary car is a 2000 Honda accord with 36,000 miles in good condition. Do I have many yrs left on this car. Should I trade it now for a new car or use it for a few more years then buy new car and use Honda as a second car if it is still in condition. I can always rent a car if I need second car right now I do less than 7500 miles a year.
I would keep both cars. Both are very low mileage and are heaper to maintain than getting a new one. Your Honda has many more years of life as long as you maintain it.
Is the Honda a V6 auto? If so ditch it unless you want to rebuild your transmission soon.
Otherwise, that Honda has hundreds of miles to go and is worth keeping. The Toyota is up to you. Is it an All-trac? If so you'll find an easy buyer. But if it is sentimental and you believe the repair costs are worth it, then keep it.

the Honda is a special edition sedan version and a v4. The Toyota is a le version not a all trac
If you're the only driver and you drive so little each year, I don't see the need to keep the maintenance and insurance on the Toyota (besides for sentimental reasons) when you have a reliable, low mileage Honda.
The Corolla is just a money pit - the only reason to have it is sentimental value but if it means that much, take a picture of it - lot easier to store and it will cost you less.
The Accord has very low miles - no need to get rid of it, but if you're only putting 7,500 miles on a car annually, my advice is sell both of the econoboxes and buy a 3-5 year old Mustang, or something else that's actually fun to drive yet has some utility.

actually me and my wife both drive , but for years we had only one car. Very rarely does my wife need the car for the day and we have public transporation so I am not stuck. IIt is probably cheaper to rent a car 3 times a year than throwing money into the Toyota.
The problem I don't know what is going to break next. The radiator on the Toyota is rusting, The struts are worn somewhat, radio broken and when in cold weather the speedometer cable makes a horrible noise
Since the Corolla is costing you all this money now to maintain it. Then I would say your 1988 Corolla has served you well, in the many years you have owned it. However it is time to say good bye to the car. You really don't know what is going to break next, and at that age it is always going to be something. So saying goodbye to the car is the most practical thing to do in this case. Donating it is a good idea, and you get a tax deduction for doing so.

You are obviously lying about the Toyota. They never have these kind of problems, only domestic cars do.
Just kidding, poking a little fun at a couple of Toyota fans on the board who really do seem to think this is true.
In all seriousness, it doesn't seem like you really need the Toyota so I'd dump it, problems or not. You are correct in that you would spend far less renting a car a few times a year if you need it than keeping this one licensed and insured "just in case," not to mention the repair issues.
If you like the Honda, keep it. With the amount of driving you do it should last another 20+ years.
Though your Toyota was made during its golden years, as you do not DIY repairs, you should rid of her. She's not worth the money, unless it is REALLY sentimental to you, then money are of not meaning there.
As of your Accord. IS IT MADE IN JAPAN? If not, it all goes down to maintenance and your driving style. You keep neglecting her - you will have same problems you have with Toyota, as 120 000 miles for Corollas ain't no mileage. No matter what duster here believes, those and old Civics run forever.
