I live in a state now that doesn't - Michigan. In fact, it is perfectly legal here to keep the front license plate from a previous state on the vehicle.
Previous to that, I lived in Colorado, where both front and back plates are required.
This makes more sense to me: I was rear-ended once and the person who hit me promptly backed up, did a U-turn and left the scene. I was able to get his plate number since it was on the front bumper, and the cops recovered the car (but unfortunately not the driver; turned out he was driving a stolen car and he dumped it a few blocks away. )
On googling, it seems that the majority of states require a front and rear plate and it seems that makes more sense. It surely must make police officers' jobs easier to be able to locate or identify vehicles without maneuvering around to the rear.
In NY we are required to have front plates on all cars, but especially cars that look extra goofy with them. Those with cars costing over $150,000 are exempted from the requirement as a consequence of owning their own personal judges.
Not required in Delaware. I spent the previous twenty years living in states (Virginia, Maryland) where it was required and now it feels strange to drive my car there when I'm visiting.
It's required in Ohio. It looks terrible! There's talk that they may no longer require it and I certainly hope that's the case. They're not too strict with it, though. We've never had one on our truck and nobody has said a thing about it.
It's not that big a deal folks. When I was younger I spent years driving a sports coupe without front plates because I thought it looked better and I got plenty of tickets for it as a result. I wizened up and realized having a front plate doesn't do anything substantial to a vehicles styling and simply isn't worth the trouble.
A Front Plate is not required here in Arizona, Chiroptera.
I can appreciate the benefits / advantages of a front plate but prefer the "No Front Plate" look.
