What good is a truck bed when you can't haul a sheet of plywood or sheetrock in it?
One of the reasons I've never upgraded from my 1990 Dodge is that it's so hard to find a used extended-cab pickup with an 8' bed anymore. And when you see one, they're kind of funny looking because they're so much longer than most of the trucks out there.
Actually, I don't know why everyone DOESN'T buy pickup trucks. Now that trucks are four door, why even consider a sedan? Trucks are as comfortable and luxurious as sedans and they also have utility.
I will always drive a pickup.
Performance isn't that great. Plus, finding a place to parallel park one on the street or in a cramped parking garage isn't easy either. I have a short bed club cab and it's fine for hauling stuff but not the best vehicle for driving around in otherwise. A long bed crew cab is even less maneuverable.
I drive one. Yes. I haul things. I drive one because a sedan just won't go on the ranch roads. I get 17-18 mpgs town, 22-24.5 hiway over the last 120,000 miles. So much for the poor mileage comment. This is about as relevant as to why people buy expensive cars. Mostly, because they can and they don't have the need to explain it to folks that can't.
I don't have a 4 door pickup truck.
I think of it as a 4 door sedan with a rather large trunk.
It rides like a car, five normal sized adults seated comfortably, and a lot of whatever in the lockable trunk.
They give people what they want I guess.
I like old trucks with regular cabs and long beds...... for work. Also, the older ones were shorter in height, which I miss terribly. I'm not short, but sheesh, the new 2wd's are as tall as the old 4wd's. Just weird if you ask me.
I also miss the days of small entry-level trucks that were about the price of sub-compact cars.
Oh well. I get by with a good ol' wagon and a trailer hitch.
I sat on my buddy's front porch and he said to me; just watch for the number of heavy duty, luxury pickups. Sure enough, about one out of six were those $ 40k to $ 50k models, yet you never see anything loaded on the back. Why the infatuation?
Because a Prius really sucks at towing a tandem cargo trailer?
Many do use these as status symbols, but just because you see an empty bed, doesn't mean it never hauls a load. I personally have a midsize SUV that does double duty for me, gets me to work and back each day, and hauls my travel trailer and all of us and our gear to camp outs on weekends. I use a small utility trailer for loads that I don't want to put in the back of the SUV.
That's pretty damn good for a full size truck. I suspect it's a diesel getting that kind of mileage.
