What ever happened to the 2-way tailgate? It was a brilliant idea that sorta died. My Honda Ridgeline has a 2-way tailgate which makes sense because you can fold it down when you haul stuff in the bed and open it sideways when you want to access the trunk for general shopping. Are there any other current-generation vehicles with a 2-way tailgate or is the Ridgeline the only one?

Whats the draw of a side opening tailgate? Wouldn't that just require a huge amount of swing room?

I guess I don't understand it.

I've heard Dodge picked that idea on trucks.
Indeed it is very convenient. Yes, it does ask for a major swing. I also am smart enough to plan my parking.

You don't have to lift cargo over the tailgate. Think about water softener salt or fertilizer. Much easier for items like that. In the case of the Ridgeline it also gives you access to the under-bed locked storage.

When is there a shortage of swing room at the rear of a pickup>

Sure you do if you want your cargo far enough in the bed to close the tailgate.

The 2 way tailgate was an old idea that has been around a very long time. Here's Ford's "Magic Tailgate" as it came on a 1966 Mercury Colony Park station wagon.

My father's 1970 Chevy wagon had the two way tailgate. It was convenient.

But you have to stretch/bend. My truck has a camper with swing out doors. I can also use the bumper to step in. On taller trucks ( mine is stock but sits high on the back cause it's a4x) with a camper shell you have to crawl in. Pita to say the least.
With tailgate down you're also reaching further because the tailgate down puts you that much further back.
