I once passed a guy who was slowing down to deliver newspapers early in the morning. Then he chased after me for several blocks, screaming "hey, why you pass me!?"
So, to answer your question, because people are insane and prone to fits of rage when they're behind the wheel of a car.
I find this to be very odd behavior, and I would include in it those who drive very slow in front of you and then speed up when you try to pass, even maneuvering to keep you from getting past them when you try to go around. I don't understand it at all, but they are obviously not in a healthy frame of mind.

This is a constant here in MD. Or the guy in the left lane 100 yards behind you who punches it as soon as you put on your signal to pass the car in front of you.
Noticed a couple of time, a slow driver is in front of me. I got around and pulled ahead and sped away and the person honks at me.
Why would they do that? It's not like I cut the person off. I have every right to get around and away from a slow driver.
He was probably one of those idiots we have to share the roads with who has control issues and gets peeved off when some one has the audacity to pass him,
i always assume these morons have a gun in their car and are looking for an excuse to use the stand your ground law if a confrontation arises.
Or it could have been some one who knows you and the honk was just a friendly way of saying hi..
The road is like an insane asylum. All kinds of nut cases work out their mental issues behind the wheel. I just assume everyone else is crazy or will do something crazy and drive accordingly.
This is one of the reasons why I drive cars with tons of horsepower. If I want to get around someone, there's generally nothing they can do about it, even if they do try and speed up/block me. If I'm content staying behind them, I don't have to use it.
Don't get tailgated too often, either.
