48. In fact, I have driven through every county in the lower 48. (but I did not "drive" in Nantucket MA or San Juan WA.) Most of them twice or more. It was great fun, I loved every minute of it. When my wife and I did it together (we are birdwatchers) we kept a log of every species of bird we identified in every county, and have a bird list for over 2,000 counties. Here are the counties in which we have recorded three or more species of birds:
Every state except Alaska, Alabama and South Carolina. I avoid Alabama like the plague and Alaska is too cold for me to even bother going there then finally South Carolina is just a place where I have never been.
All except Hawaii, but have rented a car there a few times. I have crossed the country a few times, and zipped up and down several times up on both coasts.
Driven... TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, FL, AR, OK, KS, NE, MO, IA, IL, MN, NM, AZ, CA. I've been to Hawaii and Alaska but we figured it would take too long by car so we flew instead.
By my count, I've driven to/through 22 states: IL, IA, WI, TN, MI, MO, KY, AL, SC, NC, GA, FL, VA, ME, NY, NJ, RI, MA, CT, PA, NH, VT. Plus three Canadian provinces: NB, NS, and PE. When I've visited the west or southwest, I've flown in rather than driving.
