Just saw a dune buggy going down the road. The simplicity of it intrigues me. Always dreamed about building one in my garage but it hasn't happened yet. I recall there was a lot more interest in them way back in the 70s but not so much now. May be I am in the wrong part of the country. Of course back then there were a lot more Beetle chassis and motors to use as base.

Horsepower is king in the sand.

Buggies have come a long way since it was based on a VW chassis, but they still have a stock VW class at Baja.

This is still big in the West with annual events at Pismo, Glamis, Sand Mountain, and others. We were in Todos Santos Mexico just North of Cabo San Lucas and there was a whole group driving down main street.

The OP started me going, and I love sand rigs. These are based loosely on Class 1 unlimited Baja buggies. If I only had the cash to waste, but alas I can enjoy!

I had a tube framed rail. Street legal. Spent about a thousand dollars on it and built in in the garage. A lot of fun and easy on gas. Drove my friends with big gas guzzler four wheel drive crazy, with how I could go everywhere they could go.
Some of these other posters must be rich. I would buy a used one and pull it apart and repaint it and just go over all the parts to get together a fresh buggy. Those old fiberglass Buggys can still be found also. Look at ebay.

I have neighbors that vacation everywhere with their dune buggies. They pull a pop up trailer behind one of them, and the family all head somewhere for the weekends. Looks like fun too !!

I saw one recently. I believe it was an old VW Beetle frame (rear engine). It looked cool and would be usable most year round in SC weather.
