How hard do you work it? (Weight / miles / day / duty cycle (24x7 or 8hrs x 5?))
I've used Diesel Ford Transits in China everyday for several years. (~ size of a VW Euro Van) I like them and their size!
I have done some long distance Fed Ex rural routes and used Sprinters (they are nice driving and handling, but not cheap to keep alive).
For intown / light use I would not be afraid of the Datsun, they are usually tough.
For serious road miles and need for long service and economy I would want a diesel. I would buy a used ex-DHL Sprinter.
For very light and road miles + economy, I would use a Ford Transit in Diesel, or a Canadian Transport (Diesel Eurovan). You can also have VW- Eurovans made from TDI donors ~ $12k. Several people across USA specialize in this. They get ~ 35mpg. But are underpowered for towing or cargo.
