I am moving to the Bay Area from Boston soon, but I am thinking of selling my car and flying out there. Reason being, my car is fairly old (Mazda 3 2004), and I'm ready to get a new car anyway. So I may just fly out . . and buy something when I'm there.
A few questions for those who may be able to help.
#1 Do I need a California license to buy a new car or can I use my Massachusetts license for the purchase, and then register and get a new California license at that time?
#2 I am literally going to be in between a job. So I have an offer letter, with the amount offered, and the acceptance of that letter, but I wont be working until one week after I get to the Bay Area. Can this be used as proof of income so I can purchase the car, or do I have to wait until I actually get my first paycheck?
#3 Any other information you have that might be valid, or if you have an easier answer to how to do this would be much appreciate.
I don't know the particulars of buying a car in Cali, but I agree with leaving your Boston car in Boston, it's rusty or will soon be.
You know, I would chill out for that first week, don't buy the car till you are at least started on the job. You could just stay in a hotel close enough to BART to take that to work when you start.
I agree with M3 Mitch, you'll have a week to explore and get a feel for the area. Are you working and living in the same city? I'm located in the Bay Area myself.
Leave Boston ASAP and drive out to SF. This is a great time to see the rest of our country. keep the car until it would cost more to fix it than replace it. Drive 'em 'till they die.

I'm working in Castro Valley, but staying with my friends in San Francisco until I find a place.

I dunno, it's probably not worth much anymore. I'd guess 2,500-3,000 bucks or something of that nature to sell quickly. It has scratches on it and a couple dents.

You can possibly take a BART train towards Castro Valley and get to work faster than you could drive through traffic. Google Maps shows that it take just under an hour to get from SF to Castro Valley while driving could easily take 2 hours during rush hour.
I'm not sure exactly how the Hybrid/HOV lanes work in cali, but you could get an LPG equipped F-250 or Ram 2500 to use them.
