Hi. I have a 2013 Toyota Corolla. Moving from L.A. to Portland OR. How can I safely use a hardtop carrier on the roof without causing damage? No money to install roof rails. What accessories do I need? Long zip ties? What kind of straps? Clips? Tips? Personal experience welcome! Thanks.

Reason: clarification
Get a rack, even a ski rack will work. You do NOT want that carrier resting on the roof, the vibration will scratch the paint, if not do worse. Besides, how much could it hold? Can you shipp some stuff?
The blanket will rub the paint. I watched my DH ruin a spot on his Audi with a shop rag rubbing a bug mark. It took a long time to buff out. Think what hours on the road being buffetted by wind will do to that carrier and your roof. Don't muck up a new car.
Look into installing a hitch and renting a small U-Haul. I see compacts pulling trailers all the time. Harbor Freight has trailers you can buy for about the same as rental costs. You can decide to sell it later if you don't want to store it.
We towed a small U-haul 4x8 trailer behind my wife's Saturn SC2 when she moved from Oregon to Wyoming. That's a much smaller FWD car than yours, and we had a lot bigger and steeper mountains to go over than you'll have between LA and Portland. Stick to I-5 and you can easily tow the 4x8 U-haul. If that's way too much space, they have a Sport Trailer you could check out.
I have seen carriers on cars that use a roof rack that. Ties to the drip rails or roof edge where the door overlaps with C clips that have nylon straps sewn in.

Hmmm. Certainly makes me pause. I had read about the damage it could cause to my sedan, front wheel drive, weight restrictions...et al. Do you have any tips or do/don'ts? Thanks
Can't use the sport trailer from uhaul for my toyota corolla according to uhaul website.
Does anyone have experience using a cargo carrier on a sedan without a roof rack?
