I consider my horn to be a "Nearby Driver Stupidity Alert" system. It gets sounded frequently around here!
How often do I get honked at? Hardly ever, but when I do, it's usually by drivers that take offense to my pointing out their lack of driving skills by honking at them.
Most are too busy doing whatever it is they're doing besides focusing on the road to honk back. But I've observed that most don't even understand why I was honking at them in the first place so they're too confused to honk back!
A couple times every week and always at the same spot for the same reason. There is a stop light with two right turn lanes and, obviously, when you get a green arrow to turn right, you are supposed to stay in your lane and both lanes turn right together. At least 2 times per week, the car in the left side right turn lane totally cuts the corner and comes all the way into the right side turn lane. Beep!
I got honked at coasting up to a red traffic light yesterday. The car honking at me zoomed around me and then zoomed up to the red light, then stopped. I came coasting up behind him.
I guess he was in a hurry to get to that red light and wait?
To the OP, are you an attractive woman? Maybe that is why you are getting honked at so much.
It is rare to hear a horn around here but they are usually sounded to warn someone they are gettign too close or just did something stupid.
I occasionally hear kindly toots and thumbs up when I drive my sports car.
In my truck I have the regular horn and on a seperate button an AOOGHA horn. I like to sound that one for friends and to scare animals when they get too close to the road.
Other than that we don't hear too many horns on the Cape.
Never out west. Also, I live off a main road & am surrounded by main roads & shopping centers & never hear honking horns. I've only lightly tapped on the horn if someone almost backs into me or is writing a check at the red light when it turns green (happened last week), which is a few times/yr.
In my experience it's a regional thing. In NYC & Boston, in particular, as soon as a light turns green, blaring of the horn begins 15 cars back. I've never figured that one out... even if everyone hit the gas & screeched through the light, Dude 15 isn't going anywhere for another 2 turns of the light.
Even the best drivers will do something stupid once in a while. Nobody is 100% on their game 100% of the time.
But as far as being honked at, sometimes they're idiots for thinking the recipient did something wrong. It tells nothing.
