I would imagine people have them when there isn't enough room in the car, such as because of people, to carry all the things they want on trips.

But......is there something I'm missing here?

Simply to carry as much as possible. We use our clamshell on top of our Odyssey on long trips.

I'm thinking you're referring to the roof top carriers. One possibility is the lack of carrying space when the car, SUV, or minivan is full of passengers, and then maybe they leave it there to carry sports equipment for all the events they take the kiddies to

REI is having a sale and of the things on sale are ..... Thule and Yakima Roof Boxes. Of course, they look cool (anything in a good advertisement looks cool) and sure in some dream, I would want my Forester all decked out with my mountain bike on the trailer hitch rack, a kayak (which I don't do ..... yet) atop, other playthings displayed.....in some dream.

I am supposing that for someone like me, single or just pets in the car, it's not needed, save that money for other things.....but I thought I would ask.

Not needed for you. But if you had a spouse and three kids and a dog, you would buy one. Think about clothing x3, and all of the kids activities. We would always have one for going up to the cabin on our odyssey as a kid. Luggage for a family of five would fit fine in the back, but the golf clubs, fishing rods, tackle boxes, life jackets, etc, would have to go up top. At some point, we started taking two cars, and it no longer became needed.

Camping gear for four people;that takes a lot of room; as example. I have friend who travels a lot and always camp out as they love it. Two kids means tent attachment for his van; a tent for him and wife; a tent for cook area with rollup side. Then everything else in rear of van. He use to pull a small trailer butt his he says is less hassle and reliable.

Use it for travel and ski trips (snowboards plus skis, and everything else)!

I've thought about getting one in the past, but always decided against it. My biggest concern was this: Do I leave it on 24/7 or take it off and put it in my garage?

Good place to store the in-laws on long trips.

As noted, it's great for ski trips. All the wet stuff goes up top on the way up and back.

We take ours off because the fuel economy hit is about 15%.

We got our first one on craigslist. I sold it there after 3 years for what I paid for it. Now have a gigantic one bought at REI. It's great for boy scout trips. 7 passengers in the van and all the gear up top.
