You same people preaching about security will freely use your credit/debit card on a daily basis without batting an eye or post your vacation plans on Facebook.
LRPct, please tell me you don't use your credit card or write checks. Because you never know, anything could happen.
Bottom line - if blurring out the plate makes you feel better then do it. If you are not concerned with it , don't do it. Why are people here trying to convince others to feel as they do? Worry about yourself, let others worry about themself.
There have been some posts that are kinda silly though. For one, personal anecdotal experience doesn't say anything about the overall risk factor. If you've been posting your plate numbers and name and address for years and nothing has happened, good for you. That's like saying you never lock your car or house and haven't been robbed. Does it prove that those security measures are unnecessary? Perhaps. Or maybe it just means you won the numbers game because for all the bad things we see happen in the world we are individually very unlikely to have them happen to us.
As mentioned, safety is an illusion because what prevents bad things from happening to us individually has more to do with statistical probability than the security measures we implement. Still, if we can influence the odds even a little, why not? Little measures like blurring out a plate may not help us much, but does it hurt us?
Another silly thing is this idea that because you aren't doing everything then there's no point in doing anything. Unless you're going to live in fear like you're being hunted, you can't do everything. We could always do a bit more. And no matter what we do someone who targets you can circumvent your security measures if they want to bad enough. Chances are if you get victimized it will come from a direction you weren't even looking.
In the end, it's all about what we personally feel comfortable with. If you're ok showing your plates, fine. If you're ok posting your vaca plans on FB, fine. If you're ok handing your cc to the waiter, fine. If not, don't do it.
Let's assume the worst case. Someone sees your license plate in the ad and is able to determine your name and address. So they then call the police and say their car was stolen and you are now trying to sell it? All that will happen is the police come to your house and you show them the DMV registration in your name, the car title in your name, the car loan in your name, and the dealership sales receipt in your name. The police will then arrest the accuser for filing a false report.

How is that the worst case?
The worst case is that someone sees your car, wants it, and decides to go steal it. I know a few car guys that live in condos with covered parking but no garage. It'd be easy to steal their cars if a thief knew where to look.
. if you see a plate with a Q in it on a TV show it's obviously as fake as a 555 phone number
what a bunch of baloney

Wow! What an adult (and intelligent) behavior. He's being logical and realistic.

"Security" in the world of today is an illusion. The REAL fools are those who think there is any security as they go about their daily lives. Just look at all the computer hacks that have taken place recently! ALL of our personal information is readily available to anyone who has a computer!
There are cameras nearly everywhere. Many people carry recording devices. Your picture is being taken, and your voice is being recorded, more than you will ever know!
this.
If you want secure, you have to live in the forests, no internet, plumbing, electricity.. time to go off-grid.

let's not forget that this is the internet. Common sense here is not required.
It is pretty horrifying for the family of Rebecca Schaeffer who was murdered right after her murderer got her address from the DMV. If that is so trivial to you well not only are you a moron but a horrible person as well.
Should one be over paranoid? No. But why actually GIVE a helping hand to criminals. Most go for low hanging fruit. Why put so much effort in helping those with bad intentions? To prove how "not afraid or paranoid" you are. Again. Darwin award.

You say you have no problem with posting your license plate, and thus, knowing your name and finding out where you live.
If it's not a problem for you, then why don't you just post your real name and address on here? It's no big deal, right?
OP talks alot of smack but you know he's just being trollish and never would back up his talk. He's too paranoid.

The worst case is they see your ad for a $12k car saying "cash only". They inquire about the car in various ways daily until you say sorry it's sold. They now know (or believe) you may have $12k cash on you...
