I'm going to be driving to the TN/NC mountains in a few weeks and I decided to rent a car this time since I got a really great offer from Hertz (free double upgrade and 20% off). I asked the lady there what cars they usually have available and she mentioned an Altima. I'm going looking at real estate on this trip and some of it possibly is in steep areas. How does a CVT behave in areas like that? Seems like I've heard of them overheating or something.
Should I pass on the Altima and ask for something else?
If it wasn't a Nissan I would say go ahead. However, since it is just a rental, and as CCc girl, it would be funny to see what happens. It should be fine since it is just once. It takes a while for them to crap out. Now, if you were buying it, no. I don't have that problem, I live in Florida.
snl,
That car won't haul azz up the two lanes like my VetteVert or my Scoots, but it will make it up any paved road that I can think of, here in western NC.
Unpaved 'road', spinning tires in gravel, not rec'd...
Nice mtns and some good grades here in western NC, but no Pike's Peak climbs.
Should not be a problem and it is a freakin' rental.

I gotta say I love the CVT with my Kymco maxi-scoot, but I've never driven a car with one.
I basically did the exact thing mentioned here in July.. Rented a car from Hertz simply because my truck was having the transmission rebuilt.. Took the rental on vacation to Gatlinburg.. Only difference is that the rental was a Chevy Spark because that was the only car they had at 2 minutes before closing on a Friday afternoon.
The Spark doesn't have a CVT.. one of the newer 6 speeds.. I wasn't a fan of it in that environment. Some of the roads up there where the cabins are in Sevierville and the like are about a 45 degree grade or so.. Just didn't feel good going up those hills. But.. There weren't any real problems with it.. Sure part of the problem is that I wasn't used to driving on those roads.
We rented a Versa with the CVT in Arizone. We thought we'd killed it on the road from Phoenix up the rim towards Flagstaff. We pulled over to take pictures and the car smelled of hot oil and metal, it was obviously not up to the task at hand, and that was the first rental car in decades that felt that way.
