Why don't more cars have overlapping wipers like the ones used on the current Ford Fusion? My old Chevy Venture van had these and I thought they done a very good job of removing water during heavy downpours since they throw the water off the sides. GM used them back in the early 90's on the W-body cars but I notice they don't use them much anymore. I assume maybe folks up north don't like them because of snow?
Cost. For uses 2 motors that are monitored and controlled by the computer to make sure the wipers don't hit each other. If you want to see how that works, turn the car off, then move the lower wiper above the upper wiper and turn the car on. It won't damage it, i used to do it with my Focus.
Most cars use a singe motor and a series of arms at the base of the windshield to move the wipers. It is much more cost effective.
My Buick Verano has these opposing action wipers. My 93 Regal Gran Sport had them. I like them - they are different. Up until the early 60's, most, if not all cars had opposing action wipers.
Makes total sense about the motor issue though....

I often wondered why they didn't do this so they didn't have to reverse them based on whether the car was being shipped to a LHD or RHD market.
The guy across the street from me has a Fusion. He doesn't like the wipers because there's a slight delay in the driver's side-wiper while it waits for the passenger-side wiper to get out of the way. He'd prefer to just have conventional wipers.
I love opposed wipers, many cars have them, the new escapes have them, and funny thing is the MKc has its wipers lay to one side, you figure the opposed wipers would be on the lincoln since it's a luxury suv, or they would share one or the other wiping system.
I like mono wipers too, but my favorite wiper design are pentagraph wipers, I hate that lay to one side wiper setup, a-symetetrical nonsense, what makes it worse is when they have to be different sizes. Like the MKC has like an 18 on the driverside, and a 26 on the passenger or some crazyness.
