This just about knocked me over for a loop. I'm a huge automotive freak, as many of y'all know & as I was helping my amigo move to Houston from SA, I passed this random RV. But lo! What is that?! That's a Euro-style plate! Wait, what?! That's a SWISS plate! Holy moley! I've never seen anything like that in all my years of driving!
How do you think he got here? (I mean, obviously on a boat! But still!) Does he have to pay customs fees or something? What are the transport/registration fees like, if there were any? Maybe the port of entry was in Mexico or Canada and he just drove into the United States?
edit: I think the default video setting is 360p, but you can go to the quality settings (the gear) and reset it to 1080p, since the video was shot in 1080p.
I saw a Fiat van-based RV down in Tombstone once, with Finland plates. This was before they brought the van over as a Dodge Ram Promaster-whatever.
Basically, if you don't plan on keeping it here, your vehicle pretty much just gets it's own "travel visa". Has a limited time to be in country, or else huge fines. Some countries require a carnet -- basically a deposit that you get back when you take the vehicle out of the country. Pretty silly in my opinion to ship a Euro RV over, when you can rent one here... but if you plan on staying for the full allowed time, it could possibly make sense... a vehicle you know better than a rental, outlets you can use, and an efficient diesel, possibly manual transmission? Count me in!

There is nothing strange about that. Even here in Alaska we have Tourists from Germany and other European nations driving their RV's. I have also seen europeans driving off-road AWD RVs that have very tall tires. All they would need is a passport and a visa to enter Canada and the US, and then drive their RV's back home. It's more convenient to drive an RV than it is to fly if you have the money and want to spend several weeks looking around. You can spend all summer driving an RV in Alaska.
If only for a relatively short period of time . . . would renting not be a more practical option?
All depends. For example, if you already own the RV the money you would spend flying from place to place, plus taxi rides, lodging, and food you could use to travel for several weeks. You can cook food purchased at some local supermarkets, take a shower, or just sleep in the RV. But if you are visiting a city, for example, then an RV would not be very convenient. Driving an RV is the most convenient in places where there are long open roads with a lot of places to pull off the road. Alaska is such a place, with beautiful landscapes, or just wildlife to look at.
