Hi everyone,

I'd like to buy a car in Arizona and move with it to Washington state.

Which fees and taxes would I have to pay?

I'm hoping to avoid paying the ridiculous sales and registration fees in Arizona.

What ever is cheaper. Honestly if the registration is still good and WA is cheaper wait till you get there to register it. If not cheaper then register in AZ.

This question gets asked so often, it ought to be a sticky.

You are responsible for taxes only to the state of your legal residence, where you will plate the car. If the dealer in AZ adds any taxes, keep the receipt, and you will be credited for that amount when you eventually pay the taxes in WA, where you will have that tax liability.

The AZ dealer should not add any taxes at all to the price of the car -- you will have to pay all applicable taxes to WA when you title and register the car there. No safety or emissions stickers should be required until you title and plate it at home.

To drive the car to WA, go to the AZ DMV and get a Transit Plate, which should cost less than ten bucks, and will enable you to drive the car for 30 days in any state. You'll need a bill of sale or signed-off title from the seller and proof of insurance.

Keep in mind that WA will have stricter limits on window tinting, and if they're heavily tinted, you'll have to remove it in WA.
