I have 1988 4x4 truck. It cuts mpg down at least 1/3rd when engaged for long periods and I suppose increases wear and tear on the components but I don't think there is anything fatal to using it a lot.
I only engage it when it's unplowed snow over 2-3 inches, ice, or on off-road trails - and only then when I feel the 2wd is not enough.

Something else: I drive a 4x4 truck for several miles each day on roads that are patchy (short dry pavement sections plus sections of black ice).
