British vs. American spellings. See also "centre", "tyre", "colour" and a few other words.

Don't know. I still use the phrase "cubic inch." I also use the phrase "engine" instead of "motor."

Back when a litre was a liter
A coin still fed a meter...

That's all I got.

The real change for the car manufacturers the standards of the measurements, nuts and bolts. Of course when they changed, everybody had to go buy metric wrenches.

The British cars up until the 50s and 60s used Whitworth standard bolts which were inch sizes, but different from US. Then they switched to US standards and years later to Metric.
They did it gradually and cars were mixed depending on when a particular component was adopted.

I doubt even now if American cars are 100% metric. I always take both metric and SAE sets to work on the car. As to liter vs. cu.in a whole culture revolved around cubic inches. I am sure it found its way into the pop culture. You think you can find a country music song with something like I am driving my 2 liter ecoboost motor.

Find one that says something like "I'm driving my 122 ecoboost motor." Probably won't find one about a beat up Tundra, either.
