So I was given a Nissan Altima 2.5s 2008 model by my aunt (mother’s sister) two years ago without a title or registration for the car. Yes I would drive illegally, but anyway I could never get a title or registration because my grandmother the person that is the owner of the car is now deceased and her husband is deceased. My aunt was given the car as a teenager and (she’s now 32yrs old) carelessly lost both of the documents. So as you can see this is my story. Fast forward more now my mom is deceased and this car has become more of a burden than ever before.

Please tell me what I should do?!

Every state has their own process for replacing a lost title. Check the web site for your DMV, or whatever it is called. Since your aunt theoretically received the car as an inheritance, she needs to follow whatever process exists in your state for getting a replacement title and then transfer that title to you. This will be easier if she transferred the title to herself after your grandparents' death. If not, then she may need whatever estate documents exist to do so. Questions may or may not be raised about why the car isn't currently registered.

There are ways to do this legally. We cannot tell you how because we don't know where you live. In the US the laws vary from state to state.

Need to know where you live.

Also, when the car was "given" to your aunt, was it titled over to her? Or is the title still in Gma's name? You mention that your mother passed away (condolences ...), is she involved as well?

Yep, talk to the DMV/RMV, explain the situation... this particular situation probably isn't real common, so it may take more than one person to be able to give you a sound answer. But they're the folks to talk to. Meanwhile, until you get this straightened out, don't drive the car anymore - it's not worth it.

Mod cut: Quoted post deleted.

Well, just in case, donate it to a charity such as Kars4Kids, they don't care about the title. It's only worth a thousand or so anyway, may as well take a tax deduction.

Is that true? I donated an old motorcycle to them years back and I recall them making sure all the docs were in order.

But I agree, if you dont want the car, a donation would be a good course of action. The write-off is likely not enough to offset the standard deduction for most people, but its a good cause nevertheless.

Go to a title service.
I'm sure they'll know exactly what to do.

Otherwise, bad neighborhood, unlocked, keys left in it... it won't be your problem for long.

That is not true. Charities are not allowed to accept goods that might be stolen without proof that they aren't. What would they do with them if it turned out they didn't belong to the person trading them in? Nobody in the organization would be allowed to drive it. They couldn't sell it to use the funds for their purposes, either. What would their end game be in accepting it?

I donated a car to the American Stroke Association a year and a half ago. They definitely asked for the pink slip.
