What you're saying is equivalent to a person saying they don't need auto insurance because statistically they probably won't get into an accident that's their fault today.
In regards to "only being wrong once"... well that's true for everything that has any sort of risk associated. As I previously stated: don't do anything you aren't comfortable with (even if it's just a gut instinct), but my opinion still stands as valid as anybody else's on this topic.
Oddly enough, i saw a guy sitting at an interstate on ramp recently... when saw him from a distance I thought he was a pan handler, by the time i got upon him and realized his sign said, 'looking for a ride' i was moving to fast to even think about slowing down or stopping. Not sure I would have given him a ride, probably not. I have not picked up a hitchhiker in years. Now If i saw someone in distress.. say a few hundred yards moving away from a disabled vehicle, maybe.. but otherwise.. not likely.
Years ago, I would but only if I recognized the person. If one of my neighbor's broke down and was walking home because nobody was at their house, without question, I would pick them up.
These days, most of the world has cell phones, even if they are too poor to pay attention.
If they are hitch hiking, they either have a big fat knife in their back pack to turn the kind driver into mince meat, or they have a friend waiting in the bushes that will turn you into mincemeat
As a teen I hitchhiked everywhere, but that was in the 70s. Just too many crazy people out there to do it again, although a few years back I was stranded on a lonely country road due to car trouble. I did hitchhike to get to work, and a very nice older couple picked me up.
I used to pick up hitchhikers but no more. Either I have gotten too cautious or the folks who are hitching nowadays are nothing like the peaceful hippie types of the 70s. Being an older woman, I just don't take the chances I did when younger.
I hitchhiked a fair bit about a decade or so ago. I didn't have a car ( poor college student), and there was very minimal public transport. I did ride my bike ( up to about 90km round trips) when the weather was nice. When the snow came it was really difficult walking to the closest grocery store (5 km away). Never had any issues. I rarely pick anyone up anymore though as both my work and personal trucks are single cabs.
I see people hitch hiking every day on the edge of town here so I'm a bit surprised that some people say they don't see them anymore. I think one pair of hitchhikers got murdered in this town in the 1970s (unsolved). Nothing recent since that I can recall.
Years back I had nice, petite lady pick me up in her truck with her cute toy dog.........because she noticed my MB chain was broken so she took the chance and glad she did dropped off at front door. But being country CO she was probably carrying too.
I did once on New Years Night 1993 on a rural road.[I was working very late] I found out she was a prostitute. I left her at a safe place in the city once she realized we would not do business or would accept a freebie or take her home. I drove considerably out of my way to find an inexpensive motel for her. She needed a place to sleep. My then GF chewed me out when I got home for putting myself in a dangerous situation. GF visualized the women crying rape or pulling a knife to slit me or firearm etc.etc.
