Your approach is why my repair shop sends a few cars every year to the salvage yard that a timely quart of oil could have saved. Cars STILL can leak oil, cars still can burn oil. The fact that oil consumption has been very slight does not mean it can't increase. Not consulting the dipstick is foolhardy. The idiot light coming on accurately reports "rapid engine destruction in progress."

Cars do not leak and/or burn oil like they use to, no need to check during every fill up or before you leave. Also, these "idiot lights" are accurate and the most sophisticated engines in the world use them just fine.
