Is this the 5.0 explorer, or the 4.0 V6.

If the 5.0...I've never really seen one need a timing chain.
Come on now.

Hes got a third gen explorer(2002+).

There were no 5.0's in the third gens, the last 5.0 explorers were the 2001 model year ones.

And you're right, the 5.0 is a tank. I have one at 220k miles.

OP's either got the 4.0 SOHC (which is notorious with timing chain issues) or the 4.6 SOHC Modular V8.

If I Were buying an Explorer it certainly wouldn't be a 2002-2003 model year. Those are some of the most problem ridden SUV's ever. OP could have easily gotten a more powerful 5.0 AWD 2nd gen for ~1000 and called it a day.

Cant go wrong with a windsor V8 designed in the 50-60's!

Well Mr Don in Austin, mechanics want money just to look over a car. I'm taking it back to the same guy and hope he will fix it if it was his fault. If not.. I'm scrapping it and cutting my losses

Dump it and use that money you would be spending on a new car and save yourself all the aggravation and trouble

That sounds like a good plan to go back to the original shop and see if there was an issue that they had, or if it is a fix that's reasonable, say under $500 or $250, or whatever threshold at which you are comfortable making that decision, but be sure that this is the last repair you will put into the car. If it's $250 and runs for two months, that's not bad, until you decide about another car. One of our receptionists had a similar issue with a Sable and it looked bad, smoke everywhere, convinced that the engine was toast, but she stopped immediately and it turned out that a hose ruptured and sent coolant all over the engine, and was fixed for a couple of hundred dollars. She drove the car for another year before the transmission went out at ~300k miles, and was in a better position to buy a used Accord. Good luck with the Explorer, and I hope it's minimal, so you can get a few more months out of it, as I know you smartly got out of the Jeep that was about to start costing you money as it was aging, and you negotiated a good deal, IMO, getting it off your books at the payoff amount.

Donating it may be worthwhile if you are in a tax bracket where the deduction is useful. Scrap pays nothing anymore.

Has anyone ever donated there car or truck to one of these donation places for tax purposes? They take them running or not and was wondering if it was better to do that... or scrap it for $200-300?

You can part it out for more than scrapping it. Part it then scrap it.

Whatever you do, don't part it out if you're not a mechanic. If you don't know what you're doing, you'll wind up with a half-stripped wreck sitting out in your driveway that a few people have come and bought the prime parts off of, and now you're stuck with figuring out how to get rid of the rest of it.

If you don't itemize your taxes it won't be.
