It's about having specialized tools for specialized jobs, or trying to get by with more general tools. All seasons will never be as good as snow tires, and snow tires will never be as long wearing or have better all around road manners than all seasons. I could pound a finishing nail into a piece of trim (without bending the nail or denting the trim) in with a 3lb hand sledge if I was careful, but a 16oz trim hammer would make it much easier to do those things. Likewise, I could drive in snow paying very careful and close attention to speed, following distance, cornering, etc...with all seasons, or I could throw some good snows on and drive a little more normally.
After reading through all this again, I still say that for a 4 cyl Fusion in an area that will have cold for substantial part of the year, the AS option will work just fine and save the OP money that is wasted on performance tires on that car.

I agree. For a naturally aspirated 2.5 Fusion, good all season tires would be great. I did fine year round and crazy amounts of Pennsylvania snow in a little 2002 Golf. If driving is so bad, maybe consider winter tires. Summer tires wouldn't be worth much unless you consistently drive in wet weather at highways speeds.

The question was not summer tires alone but summer tires paired with winter tires.
Well here is my 7K miles Pilot SS that is going to get recycle. Certainly not all worn out. Hate it when they get puncture by the edge. Switched out the summer and into the winter tires (about a month too early).

I punctured my last set on the very edge of the sidewall. Moved it to the back and it lived there another few years until the fronts wore out. I could've gotten at least 2 more years if I had been able to rotate them like I usually do.

I did. It was just over a year old. Went back to the shop that sold it to me... he tried to get me 2 new ones but they had been discontinued so we did the plug. He said if he hadn't know me for so many years and didn't know my racing background he wouldn't have done it.
That's why it went on the back and never got rotated again - the camber on the car was such that it had minimal pavement contact.
I used it with no issues until the front wore out and then replaced all 4. Had it been a fraction more to the outside I wouldn't have had a choice.
