Do you think the new Jaguar F-pace AWD might also meet my needs? It looks great on paper, but may be too small? I called the local dealer and they will have test-drive models available in January, and March/April 2016 delivery.
On the more luxury side of things, I always recommend the Porsche Cayenne for someone wanting a luxury SUV. It's a fantastic SUV and reliability is extremely good. It's also in your budget brand new, believe it or not. It's pretty much turned me off to most other SUVs, they just don't compare.
At any rate, I've owned or driven most of the examples above, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
I thought about the Porsche Cayenne - just really liked the exterior styling - one of the best-looking IMO. But how does it compare in the snow/ice?
When someone says their budget is $70K that is usually the number they want to be close to. So $30K vehicles will not suit your needs (you just won't be satisfied with a $30K vehicle mentally). In that case get Cayenne or other high end luxury model.

Yes, that is what my spouse wants me to spend. But he likes me to splurge, and I am practical. He said "You need a new car - go out and spend $70K on a convertible." He knows I love convertibles - but that is rather impractical for my needs, and the Chicago winters. Unless there is an AWD convertible with the cargo capacity I need (Audi?)? My brother-in-law mentioned Land Rover has come out with a convertible, but that may be beyond the budget. So "convertible" is not a must-have.
I want a car that is good in the winter. I am out driving in winter storms a lot, and unfortunately have been in several winter accidents, which has greatly affected my buying perspective. Every review I have read has ranked the Subaru as the best winter-driving car - so that trumps luxury for me. Are the Cayenne and other luxury brands comparable for winter driving? That is what I am trying to figure out.

I am also keeping an eye on the diesel version of the F-Pace. Not sure in interior space....they claim 62 cubic with the rear seat down. Which is good but not like the 80 some cubic feet you get with a 4 Runner. I would guess the biggest limit you have is your double bass. How long is the case?
Any interest in wagons? The VW Golf Sportwagen is coming in an AWD version.
Or the FWD version on snow tires.

The FJ seems small inside. I bet a double bass wouldn't fit.
